Important Notes About Virtual Career Fairs on MustangJOBS, powered by Handshake

What is a Virtual Career Fair?

Virtual career fairs on MustangJOBS, powered by Handshake give you the opportunity to meet recruiters and other employees through video sessions. You’ll learn more about employers hiring at Cal Poly, and connect with companies that will want to hire you.

Attending video sessions, instead of an in-person fair, means there is no waiting in line to talk to recruiters. When you register for a virtual career fair on MustangJOBS, powered by Handshake, you sign up for specific session times—securing your spot to meet with the employers you’re interested in.

There are two types of virtual fair sessions:

Group sessions. During these sessions you’ll join other students to meet recruiters and other employees at the organization. You’ll learn about job and internship opportunities, company culture, and more. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask your own questions.

One-on-one sessions. This is an opportunity to chat directly with a recruiter about jobs and internships. Recruiters that want to meet you will be able to invite you to attend virtual sessions with them.

Recruiters will likely review your profile before a session, so be sure to update your Handshake profile with your role and location preferences, as well as skills, organizations, and work experience!

Register for Virtual Career Fair and Sign Up for Sessions

  • In order to sign up for sessions with employers, you must be registered for the career fair.
  • To sign up for Group or 1:1 sessions, your profile privacy will need to be set to Community or Employers.
  • Review which employers are attending the Career Fair (follow employers you want to check back in with)!
  • You'll be able to sign up for sessions up to one (1) minute before the start time; once the session has started, you'll be unable to sign up for the session.

Preparing for the virtul career fair

Here are some best practices to help you prepare for a successful fair:

  • Review MustangJOBS, powered by Handshake's Guide to Attending a Virtual Career Fair
  • While scheduling 1:1s in advance, you can leave some flexibility to schedule and join 1:1s with other employers, as available, during the actual career fair (remember that you must schedule a session prior to its start time).
    • If you schedule a one-on-one (1:1) session with an employer representative and you will not be able to attend the schedule one-on-one (1:1), please cancel well in advance.
    • To Cancel a One-on-One or Group Session
      • You can cancel a one-on-one or group session you signed up for by revisiting the career fair event page, clicking on the “Your schedule” tab, and then click “cancel reservation” with that employer. Additionally, for all Career Services’ career fairs, there is a student help zoom link available starting one hour before the event to answer questions.
  • Ensure you have the right setup to support session audio and video. (Chat is available in all sessions.)
  • Handshake Video Requirements & Troubleshooting (Students)
  • Check out Virtual Fairs: Accessibility to see how we've made virtual fairs more accessible and for how you can partner with your us and Handshake to request an interpreter for upcoming sessions.

    Participating in the fair

All sessions will have the option for Handshake video, audio and text based chat. There is no customization for types of interaction; it is up to the employer and student joining the session to determine how they would like to connect.
